Squeegee Durometer Explained: Soft vs. Firm Blades
The squeegee does the actual work in screen printing — it's the tool that forces ink through the mesh and onto the substrate — yet it's often the last thing new printers think carefully about. Getting the blade right can fix problems that look like ink or mesh issues but are really about how the print is being pulled.
What durometer measures
Durometer is a hardness scale, most commonly Shore A for squeegee blades, running roughly from the mid-40s (soft, flexes like a rubber eraser) up past 90 (firm, barely flexes at all). A softer blade bends more as it travels, conforming to the screen and pushing more ink through per stroke. A firmer blade holds its shape and shears ink cleanly, leaving a thinner, more controlled deposit.
As a rough starting point: 60–70 duro is the standard, all-round choice for plastisol on typical low-to-mid mesh counts. Thinner water-based and discharge inks generally want something firmer, around 70–80, to force enough ink through without over-thinning the print. Once mesh gets fine — 200 and up, for halftones and detailed work — a firm 75–90 duro blade shears a clean, thin deposit without flooding the tight weave. And for heavy, high-volume deposits like puff ink or glitter, a soft 50–60 duro blade lays down the volume those inks need to look right.
Edge profile matters almost as much
A sharp, square edge is the standard choice for most printing: it shears ink cleanly, giving crisp edges and predictable deposit thickness. A round edge lets more ink through per stroke by design, which is why it pairs naturally with the same heavy-deposit jobs that call for a softer durometer — puff ink again being the clearest example, where volume matters more than crisp edges.
Angle is the adjustment you make in the moment
Durometer and edge profile are decisions you make before you start printing; attack angle is something you adjust stroke to stroke. A steeper angle, closer to vertical, pushes more ink through for a thicker deposit. A flatter, lower angle shears more and deposits less. Printers use angle as a fine-tuning knob on top of the blade choice — if a print is coming out a touch thin even with the right blade, tilting slightly steeper is often the fix before reaching for a different squeegee entirely.
How the three interact
These three variables don't work in isolation. A firm blade at a flat angle on a fine mesh gives you the thinnest, most controlled deposit possible — ideal for detailed halftone work. A soft, round-edge blade at a steep angle on an open mesh gives you the thickest possible deposit — what you want for puff or glitter. Most jobs fall somewhere in between, and dialing in the combination is part instruction, part feel.
Ink type pulls in the same direction as mesh count when it comes to blade choice. Thinner water-based and discharge inks generally want a firmer blade than plastisol at the same mesh count, because there's less margin for a soft blade to over-deposit ink that's already inclined to spread. As mesh gets finer, that gap narrows — a tight enough weave restricts flow regardless of ink type, which is why the firm, sharp-edge recommendation for fine mesh applies almost across the board.
One blade doesn't have to do everything
Many working shops keep more than one squeegee on hand rather than trying to make a single all-purpose blade handle every job. A firm blade for detailed spot-color and halftone work, a softer one for puff and specialty inks, and a spare of whichever gets the most use are common. It's a small investment next to the cost of ink and blanks, and it removes the temptation to force one blade to do a job it isn't suited for.
When something looks wrong, check the blade first
A worn or nicked squeegee edge will show up as streaky, uneven prints no matter how well you've matched durometer and mesh count — rubber degrades and picks up nicks with use, and a damaged edge can't shear cleanly regardless of hardness. If prints that used to come out fine start looking inconsistent, inspect the blade edge under good light before troubleshooting anything else in the setup.
Like most things in this craft, the numbers here are a starting point, not a rule. A squeegee guide can point you to a sensible durometer, edge, and angle range for your ink and mesh, but the final adjustment always happens on a test print, by eye and by feel.
