Plastisol vs. Water-Based vs. Discharge Ink: Which One to Use
New printers often default to whichever ink their local supplier stocks, without realizing how differently plastisol, water-based, and discharge inks behave — not just in how they print, but in what equipment they need and what the finished garment feels like. Picking the right one for a job is as much about the end use as it is about your press setup.
Plastisol: the forgiving workhorse
Plastisol is a PVC-based paste that sits on top of the fabric rather than soaking into it, which gives prints a slightly raised, opaque feel — the classic thick, glossy screen-print texture most people picture. It doesn't dry out on the screen the way water-based ink can, which makes it far more forgiving for long print runs, complex multi-color jobs, and printers who are still learning to manage their screen and press. Its main tradeoffs are the heavier hand feel on the garment and the fact that it needs to reach a specific curing temperature (commonly cited around 320°F at the ink surface) rather than simply air-drying.
Water-based: soft hand, more demanding process
Water-based ink soaks into the fabric fibers instead of sitting on top, producing a much softer hand feel that many buyers associate with higher-end, "vintage" or "soft" printed garments. The tradeoff is that it can dry in the screen mid-run if you're not careful about keeping it moving, and it generally needs a tighter mesh and firmer squeegee than plastisol to lay down a clean deposit, since the ink itself is thinner. Water-based ink is also less opaque than plastisol on dark garments unless you use a discharge or specialty underbase, so light ink on a dark shirt can be a real challenge without the right additives.
Discharge: removing the dye instead of covering it
Discharge ink works differently from the other two: rather than sitting on or soaking into the fabric with its own color, it chemically removes the garment's existing dye and can deposit a new pigment in its place, if formulated as a pigment-discharge hybrid. The result is an extremely soft hand feel — often indistinguishable from the original garment fabric — because there's minimal ink buildup on the surface. The tradeoff is that it only works reliably on natural fiber fabrics dyed with compatible dyes, results can vary between garment brands and dye lots, and it needs adequate heat and, often, steam to fully activate.
General safety notes (not a substitute for the manufacturer's data sheet)
All three ink chemistries involve solvents, pigments, or reactive chemicals that deserve sensible handling regardless of which one you're using: work in a ventilated space, especially around curing equipment and any heat source; wear appropriate personal protective equipment such as gloves and, where recommended, a respirator, particularly with discharge ink's activating chemicals; and always keep and read the safety data sheet for your specific ink and any additives, since formulations differ between manufacturers even within the same broad ink category. This is general craft guidance, not a substitute for that documentation — treat your ink's own data sheet as the authority on handling and storage for the product you're actually using.
Matching ink to the job
A quick way to decide: plastisol is the reliable default for most commercial work, especially bold graphics, high volume, and printers still building experience. Water-based suits jobs where a soft hand feel matters more than opacity, typically on lighter garments. Discharge is the choice when an extremely soft, almost unprinted feel is the whole point, and you're working with compatible natural-fiber, dyed garments where some batch-to-batch variation is acceptable. None of the three is strictly "better" — they're different tools suited to different combinations of look, feel, and garment.
